The hepatitis B core antigen (HBcAg) is an important target for antiviral response in chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients. The studies have shown that HbcAg expressed in different subcellular location based on IHC staining patterns including cytoplasmic expression, nuclear expression, cytoplasmic and nuclear-mixed expression or negative expression. The different distributions in the hepatocyte nucleus and cytoplasm of CHB indicate the level of viral replication and histological activity.
