Description

FGF2, also known as b-FGF or basic fibroblast growth factor, is suggested to play a role in angiogenesis, the formation of new blood vessels. This is expected to occur in both normal and cancerous cells. Overexpression of FGF2 has been implicated in aggressive cancer phenotypes, enhanced chemotherapy resistance, and metastatic tumor phenotypes. Studies have also found FGF2 expression to be increased in fibroblasts, endothelial cells in early oral submucous fibrosis, and in advanced fibrosis.
