Hyaluronic Acid Synthase (HAS), also known as Hyaluronan Synthase or Hyaluronan Acid Synthase-1 (HAS1), is a membrane-bound enzyme which produces hyaluronic acid (HA) from its substrates UDP-α-N-acetyl-D-glucosamine and UDP-α-D-glucuronate. The synthesis of HA allows tumor cells to migrate from the primary tumor mass, and promotes the epithelial-mesenhcymal transition through the activation of Rho GTPases and association with the CD44 receptor, which upregulates MMPs and proteolytic enzyme secretions involved in cancer metastasis. HAS is an emerging marker for cancer metastasis, as levels of HA are elevated in malignant transformed tissues.
